408 Temporary Activity Visa

408 Australian Government Endorsed Event Stream

The Australian Government Endorsed Event stream of the Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408) covers participants and workers at events that have been formally endorsed by the Australian Government. The endorsement determines which activities and workers can be sponsored under this stream.

How the endorsed event stream works

An Australian Government Endorsed Event is an event that has been formally endorsed by the Australian Government through a relevant minister or department. Endorsement is not automatic. The event organiser must seek endorsement, and the endorsement determines which occupational categories and nationalities can be sponsored under the stream.

The sponsoring organisation must hold Temporary Activities Sponsorship approval and be either the event organiser or an entity directly involved in delivering the endorsed event. Applicants must be engaged to participate in or work on the specific endorsed event.

The stay period under this stream is generally tied to the duration of the endorsed event. This stream was also used historically for the Covid-19 Pandemic Event, which allowed stranded visa holders to remain in Australia lawfully during the pandemic period.

Government endorsement required

The event must be formally endorsed by the Australian Government before visa applications under this stream can be lodged. The endorsement is not automatic and must be sought by the event organiser.

Temporary Activities Sponsorship

The sponsoring organisation must hold TAS approval and be the event organiser or an entity directly involved in delivering the endorsed event.

Stay tied to event duration

The visa stay period is generally tied to the duration of the endorsed event. Applications to remain beyond the event period are unlikely to be approved under this stream.

Covid-19 Pandemic Event

This stream was historically used for the Covid-19 Pandemic Event, which allowed stranded visa holders to remain in Australia lawfully. This arrangement has now concluded.
