Training Visa — Subclass 407
407 Training Visa
The Training visa (subclass 407) allows workers from outside Australia to undertake structured occupational training in an Australian workplace. The primary purpose of the visa must be training. Visa holders may not perform work primarily for the benefit of the sponsoring organisation.
Sponsorship and training plan
The sponsoring entity must hold Temporary Activities Sponsorship approval. Standard Business Sponsors cannot sponsor subclass 407 Training visa holders. The sponsor must be the entity organising or conducting the training and must accept obligations regarding the training arrangement.
A formal training plan is a core requirement. The plan must clearly establish the training objectives, content and structure, duration, and the qualifications of those delivering the training. A deficient training plan is a common reason for refusal.
The subclass 407 does not provide a pathway to permanent residence. Visa holders cannot use the visa to perform work primarily for the commercial benefit of the sponsoring employer.
Temporary Activities Sponsorship required
The sponsoring organisation must hold Temporary Activities Sponsorship approval. Standard Business Sponsorship does not extend to the 407 visa. The sponsor must be the entity delivering or organising the training.
Formal training plan
A training plan setting out objectives, content, duration, and trainer qualifications must be lodged with the application. Plans that describe activities indistinguishable from employment are a common basis for refusal.
Stay period up to two years
The visa is typically granted for up to two years, reflecting the duration of the approved training arrangement. The stay period must be justified by the training plan.
Family members included
A spouse or de facto partner and dependent children can be included. Secondary applicants are entitled to work and study in Australia for the duration of the primary visa holder's visa.
