Applications are lodged through the VETASSESS online portal, where an assessment officer is allocated, requests for further documents are made online and the outcome letter is downloaded, according to the application process page. Only paid employment of at least 20 hours per week is counted, leave counts only where on full pay, and volunteer or unpaid work is excluded. Documents must be high quality colour scans, with non-English documents accompanied by translations from a registered translation service, per the eligibility page.

A statement of service must be on company letterhead and state the issue date, position titles, exact start and end dates, weekly hours, main duties, salary and the full name, title, contact details and signature of a supervisor or HR manager, as set out on the eligibility page. Priority processing delivers an outcome in 10 business days, requires all evidence uploaded upfront, and is refunded less a $179 administration fee if the deadline is missed, per the priority processing page.

A suitable outcome is usually valid for three years from issue, and renewal (two to five weeks) must be sought before expiry, with employment older than five years not counted, according to the renewal page. An unsuccessful outcome may be reviewed within 90 days of the decision, and a review decision appealed within a further 90 days using form SRG04, normally decided within 12 weeks; reassessment for a different occupation is available within 12 months, per the reviews and appeals page.
