Assessment requirements
A documentary assessment
IML conducts a documentary assessment of a higher-education degree and up to ten years of employment history. The application is lodged online.
A separate subclass 485 assessment
A separate Temporary Graduate subclass 485 qualification assessment exists. It is not the migration skills assessment and serves a different purpose.
Fees are non-refundable
Fees for the assessment are non-refundable. An express add-on is available to shorten the processing time.
Validity
A positive IML migration skills assessment outcome is valid for three years from the date of issue.
How Institute of Managers and Leaders (IML) assesses
IML ANZ reviews the whole career but states that its assessment places emphasis on the past five years of employment. The online form asks for two referees: the first should be the applicant’s current or previous manager, or a business associate where the applicant is the most senior person in the organisation, and each referee must have agreed to be contacted by IML. A link to upload supporting documents is sent after the form is submitted. Each of the nine occupations has its own assessment criteria document to be read before applying.
Fees differ by where the applicant is located. The express add-on reduces the regular 10 week timeframe to 6 weeks. An application withdrawn within 2 business days is refunded less an A$50 administration fee; after that no refund applies.
An unfavourable outcome can be challenged in two steps. A review must be requested within 90 days at A$601 or A$661 and is completed in 4 weeks. An appeal costs A$985 outside Australia or A$1,084 within Australia and takes 12 weeks. A positive outcome is valid for three years, and a renewal product exists for applicants whose letter is nearing expiry.
