Pathways depend on the qualification
The pathway depends on the qualification held. An Australian accredited qualification or one recognised under the Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accords follows a qualification-based route, while a non-accredited qualification uses the Competency Demonstration Report pathway.
The Competency Demonstration Report pathway
The Competency Demonstration Report pathway evaluates competency against Engineers Australia standards rather than mapping a qualification. It is the most expensive of the available pathways.
Category-based nomination
Applicants are assessed by occupational category, being Professional Engineer, Engineering Technologist, Engineering Associate or Engineering Manager. The specific engineering occupation is nominated within the relevant category.
Validity
Validity is non-standard. Engineers Australia states the assessment letter is valid for an indefinite period with Engineers Australia, while the Department of Home Affairs sets its own usability window for visa applications.
How Engineers Australia assesses
Applications are lodged through the Engineers Australia online portal, where the applicant creates an account, uploads documents and tracks progress. Standard applications generally take 15 weeks to be assigned to an assessor. Applicants who need a faster result can pay the fast-track fee, which has the application assigned to an assessor within 20 business days.
Two optional services are assessed alongside the core application. A relevant skilled employment assessment supports points claims for work experience and an overseas engineering PhD assessment supports qualification points. Bundled with the qualification assessment they cost less than when ordered separately at $533.50 and $357.50, so applicants who anticipate a points claim should request them at lodgement.
Engineers Australia runs a two-stage challenge process. A review must be lodged within three months of the outcome letter and is decided by an assessor with no prior involvement in the file. An appeal must be lodged within six months and goes to an independent panel. At both stages new evidence is considered only if the assessor or panel requests it, so the original application must be complete. Both fees are refunded if the challenge succeeds.
