Skills Assessment Authority

Dietitians Australia

Dietitians Association of Australia, trading as Dietitians Australia

Dietitians Australia assesses the Dietitian occupation for Australian skilled migration. An overseas-qualified dietitian must first pass stages of its separate Dietetic Skills Recognition process. Visa Plan Lawyers advises on the order of those steps and on the evidence Dietitians Australia requires.

Assessment Fees

$305 AUD

Skills migration assessment $305; appeal $174. Dietitians Australia says it usually adjusts its prices on 1 April each year, and its separate fees page still describes these figures as valid until 31 March 2026, so confirm the fee with Dietitians Australia before applying. Dietetic Skills Recognition is charged separately: assessment $1,664, multiple choice exam $1,431, oral exam $1,519.

Assessment requirements

Two routes to the assessment

An applicant is eligible with an accredited Australian dietetics qualification, or with an overseas qualification and the required stages of Dietetic Skills Recognition. The policy approved in July 2025 requires the first two stages, the assessment and the multiple choice exam. One part of the application page says all three stages.

Separate from Dietetic Skills Recognition

Dietetic Skills Recognition is the three-stage process an overseas-qualified dietitian completes to join Dietitians Australia and become an Accredited Practising Dietitian. It is not a skills assessment for a visa. The skills migration assessment is a separate application with its own fee.

Certified copies

Dietitians Australia requires certified copies of the academic transcript, the identity documents and any English test result. Each must carry the words certified true copy of the original, with the signature, and the name and address or registration number, of the certifying officer.

English, by exemption or test

No test is needed after a dietetics degree from Canada other than Quebec, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States, or an accredited Australian degree completed no more than two years before applying. Otherwise the accepted tests are IELTS Academic, OET and PTE Academic.

How Dietitians Australia assesses

Dietitians Australia states on its skills assessment for a visa page that it is authorised by the Australian Government to give skills migration assessments for dietitians, under ANZSCO code 251111. The assessment is separate from Dietetic Skills Recognition, which has three stages: an assessment, a multiple choice exam and an oral exam. Dietitians Australia usually holds the multiple choice exam in March and September and the oral exam around April and October. An overseas resident who holds an accredited Australian dietetics degree does not need Dietetic Skills Recognition. Dietitians Australia also states that a subclass 485 application under the post-study work stream no longer requires its assessment.

How much of Dietetic Skills Recognition an overseas-qualified applicant must have passed is stated in two ways on Dietitians Australia’s site. Its Skilled Migration Assessment Policy, approved in July 2025, and the opening of the application page require the second stage, which is the multiple choice exam. The overview on the same page refers to all three stages, and the documents list asks for the oral exam result. An applicant who has passed the second stage and not the third should confirm the position with Dietitians Australia before applying.

The application is made online and the supporting documents are uploaded at the end of the form. They are the final academic transcript for an Australian qualification or the Dietetic Skills Recognition result for an overseas one, a curriculum vitae, written references from a supervisor for any work as a dietitian since graduation, and an English test result where one is needed. Identity is shown by a passport or birth certificate and one other form of identification. The English requirements are a minimum of 7 in each component of IELTS Academic with an overall score of 7 or more, 350 in each component of OET, or 65 in each component of PTE Academic. Test results are valid for two years.

Dietitians Australia’s site does not state how long a skills migration assessment outcome remains valid. An applicant who is unhappy with an outcome can ask for an internal appeal by email, for a fee. The application page allows 30 days from the date of the outcome to ask, and the policy allows 15 business days, so the shorter period is the one to work to. Under the policy the appeal decision is final. A refund is available if an application is withdrawn before the assessment begins, and not once it has commenced.

Visa Plan Lawyers and Dietitians Australia assessments

For an overseas-qualified dietitian the skills migration assessment follows examinations that Dietitians Australia usually holds twice a year. Visa Plan Lawyers plans the visa timing around those dates and confirms which stages must be passed before the application is lodged.
