Assessment requirements
Experience-based assessment model
ASMIRT requires demonstrated clinical experience, being at least one year of full-time-equivalent clinical experience in the country of origin within the past five years, alongside English-language evidence. This makes the assessment more than a paper qualification check. Both recent practice and academic qualifications are considered.
Evidence and English requirements
Applicants must provide qualification records, evidence of recent clinical practice, and acceptable English-language results. Documentation completeness directly affects how long the assessment takes. Gaps in clinical experience evidence will delay or prevent a successful outcome.
Two assessment tracks
Two tracks exist: a full Overseas Qualifications Assessment and a faster pre-approved-course route at lower cost. Dual-modality applications attract an additional fee. Unsuccessful applicants have three years from the rejection letter to reapply with upgraded qualifications.
Outcome validity
ASMIRT does not separately state a validity period for its outcome. The general Department of Home Affairs rule applies, under which a skills assessment is ordinarily usable for three years from the date of issue. Confirm currency before lodging a visa application.
How ASMIRT assesses
ASMIRT sets a floor on overseas practice: applicants need at least one year full-time equivalent of clinical experience in their country of origin, gained within the past five years. Reference letters must be on organisational letterhead, signed by the Department Chief or Chief Radiographer, and state the employment dates, weekly hours, the full range of modalities performed and the time spent on each, as actual hours or percentages. English evidence is mandatory for every applicant and must be from an in-person test taken within the last two years: IELTS Academic 7.0 in every component, OET B in every component, PTE 66 in every component, or TOEFL iBT 94 with stated sub-scores; at-home tests are not accepted.
Applications go through the ASMIRT Certificate Portal, which has separate tabs for Recognised Programs, Recognition in Ultrasound and the Overseas Application, with the fee paid online and certified copies then posted. Fees are non-refundable. Certification may be by a Justice of the Peace, Commissioner for Declarations, accountant, lawyer, medical doctor or police officer.
There are three outcomes: unconditional recognition with a Statement of Qualification or Certificate of Recognition, conditional rejection recommending further documents or further clinical experience, or rejection, after which the applicant has three years from the date of the rejection letter to complete an Australian accredited program and resubmit. An appeal must be lodged within three months of the decision, as a signed letter, not by email or fax, stating the grounds with supporting documents; the fee is $306 overseas or $338 in Australia and the Board of Directors’ decision is final.
