Country information is central to every protection claim. A country information report is an authoritative document that sets out the political, security, legal, and social conditions in a country relevant to the assessment of protection obligations. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade publishes country information reports to support decision-making by the Department of Home Affairs and the Administrative Review Tribunal.

Authoritative Sources in Protection Matters
Decision-makers consider a range of authoritative sources, including Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade country information reports, UNHCR materials, current DFAT travel advice, country reports from comparable jurisdictions, reports from established human rights organisations, and independent evidence where relevant to the applicant's circumstances.
DFAT's Country Information Reports page currently lists reports for each of the 22 countries below (for Hong Kong, a thematic report on protest-related laws rather than a full country report), with the date each was published or last updated. DFAT states that the reports are prepared for protection status determination purposes, are factual overviews distinct from Australian Government policy, and draw on in-country knowledge together with reporting from other governments, United Nations agencies, civil society, media and academia.
Under Ministerial Direction 113 of 17 March 2026, issued under the Migration Act 1958, a decision-maker must take into account relevant country information made available by DFAT for protection obligations assessments; the Direction does not prevent consideration of other relevant information about the country (as stated on the DFAT page). The date of the DFAT report against the date of decision is therefore a live question in every claim, and each country page below records it.
