Elevating English Standards for Australian Visas

Australia is set to implement revised English language test score requirements for Student and Temporary Graduate visa programs. These changes, which start on March 23, 2024, aim to streamline the visa application process and ensure that applicants meet the necessary language proficiency levels.

 

New English Language Test Scores for Student Visas (subclass 500)

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

  • For Principal Course Alone: Increase from 5.5 to 6.0
  • With 10 Weeks ELICOS: Increase from 4.5 to 5.0
  • With 20 Weeks ELICOS: Increase from 5.0 to 5.5

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic)

  • For Principal Course Alone: Increase from 42 to 50
  • With 10 Weeks ELICOS: Increase from 30 to 36
  • With 20 Weeks ELICOS: Increase from 36 to 42

Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)

  • For Principal Course Alone: Increase from 162 to 169
  • With 10 Weeks ELICOS: Increase from 147 to 154
  • With 20 Weeks ELICOS: Increase from 154 to 162

Note: Scores for TOEFL iBT taken after July 26, 2023, are no longer accepted.

 

New English Language Test Scores for Temporary Graduate Visas (subclass 485)

Minimum IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

  • New Overall Band Requirement: Increase to 6.5
  • New Individual Component Requirement: Increase to 5.5

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic)

  • New Overall Band Requirement: Increase to 57
  • New Scores for Individual Components:
    • Listening: Increase to 43
    • Reading: Increase to 48
    • Speaking: Increase to 42
    • Writing: Increase to 51

Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)

  • New Overall Band Requirement: Increase to 176
  • New Scores for Individual Components: Increase to 162

Note: The English test score validity for Temporary Graduate visa applications has changed from three years to one year from the test date.

 

Exemptions and Special Considerations

Hong Kong and British National (Overseas) passport holders retain the earlier IELTS score requirements of an overall band of 6.0 and a minimum of 5.0 for each test component.
