Working Holiday Visa — Subclass 417
Working Holiday Visa for Australia
The Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) allows eligible young people from approved countries to holiday in Australia and work to fund their stay. The visa is granted for 12 months. A second and third visa are available to holders who complete the required specified work in regional Australia.
Subclass 417 — who is eligible
The subclass 417 is available to citizens of eligible countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, and a range of European and Asian nations. The applicant must be between 18 and 30 years of age at the time of application, though some countries have an upper age limit of 35. The applicant must be outside Australia at the time of application.
The visa permits the holder to work for any employer in Australia, but limits work with a single employer to six months. Study is permitted for up to four months. The visa does not lead to permanent residence directly, but holders who develop skills in shortage occupations may become eligible for skilled migration pathways during or after the visa period.
The application fee as at April 2026 is approximately AUD 635. The applicant must demonstrate sufficient funds, typically AUD 5,000 or more, to support the initial period of their stay in Australia.

To be eligible for a second subclass 417, the holder must complete three calendar months of specified work in regional Australia during their first visa. The second visa grants a further 12 months.

Why instruct Visa Plan?
Eligibility confirmation
Country eligibility, age thresholds, and fund requirements vary. We confirm eligibility before any application is prepared and advise on the correct subclass, 417 or 462, for the applicant's nationality.
Specified work evidence
The evidence required to satisfy specified work for a second or third visa must be in the correct form. We advise on what payslips, tax records, and employer statements are needed before lodging.
Skilled migration after working holiday
Where a working holiday maker has developed skills in a shortage occupation, we advise on skilled migration pathways available during or after the working holiday visa period.
