Business Visa Extension — Subclass 188
Business Visa Extension
The subclass 188 extension stream allows existing Business Innovation stream holders who have not yet met the requirements for the permanent subclass 888 visa to extend their provisional visa for two years. It is available only to existing subclass 188 holders. No new Business Innovation visas are being granted as at April 2026.
What the extension stream covers
The extension stream grants an additional two years of provisional residence to Business Innovation stream holders (subclass 188A) who require more time to satisfy the performance criteria required for the permanent subclass 888A visa. The extension is not automatic — it requires an application supported by evidence of active and genuine business activity in Australia.
State and territory governments continue to accept nomination applications for the extension stream from existing 188 holders, even though the program is closed to new applicants. Support for extension nominations is discretionary and each state applies its own criteria based on the business activity conducted under the original nomination.
The extension period is intended to bridge the gap to the subclass 888 application, not to restart the pathway. Holders who apply for and obtain an extension are expected to lodge their subclass 888 application within the extended period. A further extension beyond the initial two years is not guaranteed and is assessed on its merits.
Eligibility requirements
Current subclass 188 holder
The applicant must currently hold a subclass 188 Business Innovation stream visa. The extension is not available to holders of other 188 streams unless separately specified by the Department.
Active business operation
The applicant must demonstrate continuous active ownership and management of a qualifying Australian business during the period of the original 188 visa. A dormant or inactive business does not support an extension application.
State or territory support
Most states require the applicant to have complied with the conditions of the original nomination and to submit evidence of business activity conducted in the nominating state or territory before supporting an extension.
Genuine pathway to subclass 888
The Department assesses whether the extension is genuinely needed to meet the subclass 888 criteria, and whether those criteria can realistically be met within the extended period.

Why instruct Visa Plan?
Extension viability assessment
Not every 188 holder will qualify for an extension. We assess the business activity conducted, the state nomination conditions, and the realistic prospects of obtaining both the extension and the subsequent 888 visa before any application is prepared.
State nomination submissions
Extension nominations require detailed evidence of business activity, investment, and compliance with the original nomination conditions. We prepare submissions tailored to the specific requirements of the nominating state.
888 pathway planning
The extension is a means to an end. We use the extension period to ensure the business meets the turnover, employment, and ownership thresholds required for the subclass 888 application before the extended visa expires.
