Proficiency in the English language is often a critical requirement for individuals applying for Australian visas, whether to pursue studies, work opportunities, or permanent residency.
The Department of Home Affairs now only accepts English language test scores from the following accredited tests:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS), including One Skill Retake (OSR)*.
- Pearson Test of English (PTE).
- Cambridge English (CAE), also referred to as C1 Advanced.
- Occupational English Test (OET), specially designed for healthcare professionals.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT).
As of 26 July 2023, the Department of Home Affairs will no longer accept TOEFL iBT test results for Australian visa applications, until further notice. (TOEFL iBT tests taken before July 26 2023 will be recognized for relevant visa sub-classes to Australia.)
As of 14 December 2022, IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) has been accessible for certain test takers. The OSR option permits individuals to retake one of the four (4) test components (reading, writing, speaking, or listening) once more.
For most Australian visa subclasses, the Department principally accepts IELTS test results with OSR, except in relation to applications for subclasses 476, 482, and 485.
