The Closure of the COVID Visa (subclass 408)

A significant update has been announced by the Department of Home Affairs in relation to the availability of the Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408) for endorsed event of  ‘Covid’. Many simply call this visa Covid visa.

Starting from 2 September 2023, substantial modifications will take effect, affecting individuals who are either currently holding Covid visa or prospective Covid visa applicants.

If you’re currently holding Covid visa;

  • Starting from September 2, 2023 to January 31, 2024. you have the opportunity to apply for a visa extension for a duration of six months.
  • Should your existing Covid visa be set to expire within the next 28 days, you are eligible to submit an application for a visa extension.
  • Those who are either currently employed or have received a job offer in Australia are eligible to apply for a visa extension.
  • The expiration date of your currently approved Covid visa will remain unchanged.

Effective September 2, 2023, the Covid visa will no longer be accessible for all other visa holders. However, if you are an individual with a valid job offer or currently employed, and you possess 90 days or less remaining on your existing visa, you are still eligible to apply for the Covid visa without incurring the Visa Application Charge (VAC) before September 2.

Furthermore, applicants who have submitted their Covid visa applications on or before September 2, 2023, will have their applications assessed in accordance with the regulations in effect at the time of submission.
