Temporary Residence Transition Stream

The Temporary Residence Transition Stream of the Subclass 186 Employer Nominated Scheme visa permits sponsorship of Subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage visa holders by their Australian employers for permanent residency.

TRT Visa Criteria

Only existing Subclass 482 visa holders may qualify under this stream. Holders of the abolished 457 visa were also previously able to apply under this pathway. Applicants must meet the following criteria to qualify:

  • Be below 45 years of age, unless an exemption applies.
  • Currently hold a Subclass 482 visa under the Short-term or Medium-term streams.
  • Have held your Subclass 482 visa for at least two (2) years.
  • Have worked for your Australian employer for at least two (2) years.
  • Be nominated by your Australian employer.
  • Obtain an English test score equivalent to 6 in each band in IELTS.

Once your TRT Visa is Granted

This visa permits you to live and work in Australia on a permanent basis. It further grants a five-year travel facility to depart and return to Australia. After five (5) years, a Subclass 155 Resident Return visa must be sought in order to allow future returns to Australia.

There is no obligation to remain with your sponsoring employer under this visa.
